It was recently pointed out to me that I’m a “10,000 hours” person. No, it has nothing to do with the Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay song. I would probably feel a little younger if that were true!

It’s actually the 10,000 hour rule. You might have heard of this rule which was popularized by Malcolm Gladwell’s blockbuster book “Outliers.” As Gladwell tells it, the rule goes like this: it takes 10,000 hours of intensive practice at something to achieve mastery of complex skills and materials.

I’ve been helping families secure mortgages for their homes since 1998, so at 40-50 hours per week, that puts me at about 50,000 hours. So I guess I’m a “10,000 x 5 person.” I was shocked to learn this! I sincerely love what I do, so those hours and years have been incredibly rewarding and passed quickly.

More important than those many (many!) hours is that my clients tell me they choose to work with me because I spend so much time with them. I connect with people almost exclusively over the phone, so I take the extra time to make sure I help them understand all of their options while educating them on the process. One recent homebuyer told me she chose me over several other lenders because of my “Midwest vibe.” I took that as a compliment because it’s true that we Midwesterners live by one simple motto: work hard and be nice to people.

This simple philosophy has earned me top producer status every year since 1999, and I’m consistently in the top 10 percent of national lender rankings. When it comes to home loans, I’ve seen it all.
